Hello and happy Summer! If you’re new here, thank you for signing up for my newsletter - I’m so glad you’re here!
If you’re not from the Tri-State area of the U.S. you might have thought at one point or another, seeing me use this weird phrase in my work, that this is a strange way to say “going to the beach”. And you’d be correct. Much like the many other strange and nostalgic things said in New Jersey (ie, the pork roll vs. Taylor Ham forever-long debate, lest I incite a riot in the comments), it’s just a part of the identity around here.
The shore points here in New Jersey are known by many things, but you’ll know your favorite shore point by it’s exit number on the Garden State Parkway. Mine is Exit 0. (I’d love to know what yours is!)
Down the Shore, my latest project, is a series of 8 illustrations inspired by the quaint and Victorian architecture-filled town of Cape May. It's where I spent most of my childhood summers in the 80s thru early aughts, and even now, we still go almost every year.
Cape May is the oldest seashore town in the U.S., known for it’s stunning Victorian architecture and it’s colorful shops and floral landscape. She’s stunning, yet unpretentious - and in a lot of ways, she’s pretty unremarkable. From its look alone it could be many beach towns in the U.S., with its Victorian houses, taffy and fudge shops, lobster houses, lighthouses, boardwalks and carnival rides (we’re getting closer to Wildwood here if you’re getting picky).
Summer has a way of making me us feel nostalgic - whether its your own version of Cape May in another shore point, or just the nostalgia of summer and it’s many American inspired pastimes we enjoy - like popsicles and pools, library summer reading programs, fireworks and evening baseball games. The streets, sounds, smells and tastes of summer memories can instantly transport you to in a way feels as vivid as if it took place yesterday.
The artworks in this upcoming collection are not illustrated particular places in Cape May, they are drawn from all of memories of going down the shore each Summer. What I hope to capture is the blend of summer memories that feel somehow both like a blurry dream and a vivid memory.
Stay tuned for more updates and behind the scenes about my upcoming collection Down the Shore, a limited edition print collection, releasing for sale on July 9th. Time of the release and the link to the collection will be available to e-mail subscribers first.

I've stayed at the Chalfonte! It's from another era, indeed. Love Cape May, looking forward to seeing your works inspired by it.
Thank you for sharing, Joy! As Latins said, nomen est omen, your art and your stories always bing me some joy. Cape May looks like a lovely, charming place, I can't wait to see the project! Greetings from Poland :)
